Cabarrus tourism executive named one of the best and brightest in the Southeast

(September 17, 2015) – Concord, NC – Donna Carpenter, President and CEO of the Cabarrus County Convention and Visitors Bureau, received the Southeast Tourism Society (STS) Beacon Award during the 30th Annual STS Shining Example Award Ceremony.

“Organizations and individuals receiving STS Shining Examples are being pointed out as achievers of great merit. They are coveted awards,” said STS President Bill Hardman.

Under Carpenter’s leadership since 2009, the Cabarrus County CVB has achieved accreditation from Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI), strategically relocated the Visitor Center and has made significant strides in advocacy efforts including the development and implementation of the “Destination 2020” vision plan, a roadmap to enhancing connectivity, safety and visitor experience.

“It’s a privilege to represent such an incredible destination,” said Carpenter, “My success is made possible by the guidance of our Board of Directors, hard work and dedication of CVB staff and support from our elected leaders, hospitality partners and community.”

The Beacon Award recognizes an individual who best exemplifies outstanding leadership in the pursuit of excellence and who has advanced the tourism industry. Cabarrus County is now home to two Beacon Award winners. Charlotte Motor Speedway’s President and General Manager Marcus Smith received the honor in 2012.

The Southeast Tourism Society presents Shining Examples Awards to salute achievements in tourism, which ranks in the top three industries in each of the 12 STS states. This year’s awards were presented during STS Fall Forum in Charleston, WV on Sept. 9.
